MY NEW FOUND LESSONS FROM THE STORY OF RUTH
Before dropping my "church goer" status all in the name of being a Christian, whenever I heard the story of 'Ruth', there's only one thing that comes to my mind - "The woman who was willing to die with her husband's family". In my (Yoruba) tribe we call such person 'Abokoku'. Somehow, I didn't see anything worth studying or emulating about the life of Ruth - because it felt stupid for one to leave her entire family all in the name of commitment (Well, my subtle hatred for men was responsible for this thinking). Coming into Christ, I have not only seen the beauty in the life of Ruth but I have also learnt very important things that can be applied in our every day life. Ruth was a initially a widow who made a lifetime decision to forsake her people, country, gods etc. In my view, it takes someone to have tasted a better life for them to abandon his/her people, country etc. Ruth was a Moabite, these people committed several atrocities and were severely hedonistic - I'm sure her marriage to one of Mahlon Naomi's son introduced her to a better life. Aside the stories people heard about the God of Israel, she must have experienced it at first hand. Ruth must have experienced what David talked about in Psalms 34:8 "Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him."
Lessons to draw from the life of Ruth
● Taste And See That The Lord Is Good
Ruth saw the need to change the friends she had. She told her Naomi her mother in law that "Your people shall be my people". Remaining among the Moabites was not a thing to think about for Ruth, she knew if she had stayed back when Naomi expected her to, she wouldn't have been able to grow closer to the God of Israel. She followed God with so much reckless abandon. As a believer who just got saved, you certainly will have friends who you know can never be good for your growth in the faith. Why not be like Ruth, follow God with so much reckless abandon just so you can grow closer to him, knowing that your commitment to God is the most important thing.
● The New
Following God will require you to make some costly choices (from a human standpoint) but always, the return on the choices are high and they far outweigh your investment. Ruth after the death of her husband was once again a single (unmarried) woman. She abandoned herself completely to God unlike a lot single women you'd find today who think a relationship with a man is the answer to life Which eventually blurs the reality of the ultimate answer to life found in a deep relationship with God. She left everything that she knew could hold her back from following God and went ahead to follow Naomi to Bethlehem. Sometimes, your faith will require you changing your environment but at the end of it all, it is God taking you through the process of achieving his purpose for your life.
● No Hold Back
After Ruth got to Bethlehem with Naomi, she didn't see the need to stay indoor to sulk or slip herself into depression because of her situation instead she took up a job and was faithful and diligent at it. Guess what? It was at this same job that she found a husband. Today, we have such a huge number of people who decide to cut everyone around them whenever they are going through a terrible moment in their life. This period, they want to sulk and most likely stay indoor because "the worst thing that could ever happen to any human" has happened to them. Instead, be like Ruth who found something doing. She got herself busy and threw idleness out of the window. I believe it was by divine providence that Ruth got to the field of Boaz. Volunteer, attend events, go on dates - you never know what could come out of these things at the end of the day.
From now henceforth, I'll begin to see Ruth from a different lens as a committed, devoted, diligent woman who was willing to stick to the Lord and his people.
