  Before dropping my "church goer" status all in the name of being a Christian, whenever I heard the story of 'Ruth', there's only one thing that comes to my mind - "The woman who was willing to die with her husband's family". In my (Yoruba) tribe we call such person 'Abokoku'. Somehow, I didn't see anything worth studying or emulating about the life of Ruth - because it felt stupid for one to leave her entire family all in the name of commitment (Well, my subtle hatred for men was responsible for this thinking). Coming into Christ, I have not only seen the beauty in the life of Ruth but I have also learnt very important things that can be applied in our every day life.   There's something fascinating and intriguing about the story of Martha and Mary. One can identify their different personalities and as well learn from it and also their choices in life. One of the fascinating things includes the way Martha addressed Jesus. She basically took her anger and frustrations towards her sister out on Jesus. Reading that part, I sense a lot of frustration and irritation. Apparently Martha was tired of seeing Mary just sit with Jesus, while she was running around taking care of everyone. I bet she would love to sit down and listen to Jesus but is held back by the things she felt are needed to be in place. When you read this story, you can feel the tension between the two sisters.  Martha is frustrated and angry and apparently it sucks. She goes ahead to not directly talk to her sister but communicate her anger and frustration through Jesus hoping to hit and get her message across to Mary. Amongst the many things that God is, he is also our Father! This is a statement of fact but a lot of people tend to realize this when their father dies or abandons them. They go "Oh! God is the father of the fatherless." Which of course is true but you don't have to wait for such thing to happen before you come into the realization of the fact that he is our Father. You can be in love with your earthly father, having a good relationship with him and still come into the realization that God is your father; in fact, a greater version of your earthly father. Jesus made mention of God as his father in the gospels several times. However, to the Jews, this was a new way of addressing God. The justification of some Christians that God doesn't have a sense of humour strikes me like a thunder. How do you say a God who created man in his image according to his likeness has no humour? If man does have a sense of humour, so does God. Man's sense of humour may have been somewhat corrupted/perverted due to sin but it doesn't change the fact of the discussion matter. For example, God has intellect just like we do, he is creative just like we are, he feels sad just like we do etc but the sinful nature can make us misrepresent the true nature of God. Christianity being perceived as boring is one of the things that makes me cringe. I used the word "perceive" because in it's true sense, it isn't; just that many people have portrayed it go be "boring". Quite a number of people believe that Christianity, being cranky and condescending go hand in hand. We haven't portrayed the Father the way we should which is quite disheartening. Anyone can be boring but does being a Christian mean you have to be boring? No! In this current world, we feel the only way to have fun means doing the worldly things (pre-marital sex, binge drinking, etc).
